The Illusion of Transparency: Why Your Chat Messages Aren't as Clear as You Think

Ever had someone message you on Slack or Teams with one or two cryptic sentences—and zero indication of what they actually want from you?


You pause for a few seconds, waiting for the follow-up message that explains the point. It never comes. So, you're forced to ask the obvious question: "What's the action item for me here?" (Or something similar.)


As you watch those three little dots pulse on the screen while they type a response, a mild wave of frustration sets in.

You realize how much mental effort you’ve already invested in a conversation you didn't initiate, for a task you don't even understand yet. You also realize that if you hadn't actively pointed out the missing piece—the actual request—the conversation would have gone nowhere.


Sound familiar? It probably happens to you more often than you’d expect.


Why The Brain Takes This Shortcut


Let me tell you right away that most people don't do this with ill intent — and they aren't just trying to save on word count. They do this simply because human beings naturally suffer from a specific type of egocentric bias.


In landmark cognitive psychology research, Thomas Gilovich, Victoria Husted Medvec, and Kenneth Savitsky demonstrated this exact struggle: we experience our own thoughts, intentions, and internal motives so intensely that we automatically assume they "leak out" for others to see.


This is what we call the Illusion of Transparency. We systematically overestimate how accessible or "transparent" our personal mental state, intent, and background assumptions are to the outside world.


When applied to random messaging at work, the breakdown follows a predictable pattern:

  • The internal experience (100% signal inside your coworker's head): "I'm reviewing the executive summary for this incident report and wondering if it comes across clearly to an outsider. I know my teammate has a sharp eye for user perspective. I'll drop it in the chat to get their gut reaction."


  • The Illusion of Transparency: Their brain bridges the gap between their intent and their typed message. Because they know they are simply looking for your perspective, their brain assumes you instinctively know that too. Their intent feels completely self-evident to them.


  • The transmitted signal (20-25% signal on the screen): The actual chat message goes like this "Hi! Here is the exec summary of the investigation I worked on."


  • The cognitive tax on the receiver: Because digital text carries zero tone, intent, micro-expressions, or voice modulation, the illusion instantly shatters on your end. Instead of receiving a clear prompt, you are handed a puzzle. You are forced to expend cognitive load decoding their intent—shifting the mental workload entirely onto you.
